Always use -D_THREAD_SAFE -D_REENTRANT when compiling... it won't hurt

anything and might help.  One or the other is usually required.

Honour CC, LD, CCPP etc. from build environment (Usefull for using a
differnt compiler ie: gcc 3.x on FreeBSD 4.x)
